What on Earth is Happening with Pakistan Cricket?
Okay, let’s talk about the absolute rollercoaster that is Pakistan cricket right now. If you’ve been tuning into the Test series against England, you already know it has been a really tough watch. We are down 2-0. The first match was a brutal innings defeat, and we lost the second one by 194 runs. Ouch.
Naturally, the internet is on fire. Fans are upset, ex-cricketers are ranting on talk shows, and basically, everyone is pointing fingers at the PCB Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi.
But guess what? He isn't sweating the backlash at all.
Naqvi’s Response: "Look at the Rankings"
Naqvi recently spoke up and basically said, look, these massive changes absolutely had to happen.
He didn't try to sugarcoat the terrible Test results, but he did push back against the haters. He reminded everyone to take a breath and look at how much the white-ball formats (like ODIs and T20s) have actually improved since he took the job.
His exact quote to the press was pretty bold: "I have never been afraid of criticism, and I never will be. Those who say cricket has been destroyed since I came - look at what the rankings were before."
He also hinted that there are some deeper behind-the-scenes issues going on, but he is keeping his mouth shut about those for now so the focus stays on the cricket.
Cleaning House Before the Third Test
So, what exactly did the PCB do to make everyone so angry? They completely cleaned house right before the final Test on September 9th.
They officially dropped seven established guys from the squad. The list of players sent packing includes some massive names:
Mohammad Rizwan
Imam-ul-Haq
Salman Agha
Ali Usman
Aamer Jamal
Awais Zafar
Khurram Shahzad
Who is replacing them? This is where it gets crazy. The board is throwing caution to the wind and bringing in five totally uncapped players. They are joining Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal (who only have about 10 matches of experience between them). We are talking about fresh faces like Arafat Minhas, Mohammad Imran Jnr, Saad Baig, Mohammad Imran Randhawa, and Razaullah stepping up to the plate. It is a massive gamble.
The Coaches Weren't Safe, Either
The shake-up didn't stop on the field. Naqvi is mixing up the coaching staff, too.
Sarfaraz Ahmed and Umar Gul have been let go from their coaching roles. Instead, Mike Hesson (head coach) and Ashley Noffke (bowling coach) are stepping in to take over the red-ball setup, since they are already handling the white-ball team.
It’s a bold move, no doubt about it. Whether this massive reset actually works against England is anyone's guess, but Naqvi is clearly sticking to his guns.
