Fuel costs in Pakistan are on the rise again. The government pushed petrol up by Rs 12.90 per litre and high-speed diesel by Rs 3.72 per litre, with the new rates taking effect on Tuesday, September 8.

Here is what you will pay at the pump right now:

• Petrol: Rs 358.77 per litre

• High-Speed Diesel: Rs 381.77 per litre

Heavy government taxes make up a huge chunk of those numbers. Every litre of petrol currently carries Rs 114 in taxes and duties, while diesel includes Rs 100 in government levies.

Why Fuel Costs Keep Moving Daily Gas station prices do not stay fixed for weeks like they used to. Back in July, the government handed daily price adjustments over to OGRA so rates could track international oil market movements in real time.

Even with this week's increase, prices are still lower than the record peaks from earlier in the year. Following market disruptions in early spring, diesel hit a high of Rs 520.35 per litre on April 3, while petrol topped out at Rs 458.41.

The diesel hike is smaller, but because heavy transport trucks, farm machinery, and commercial generators rely on it, higher transport costs usually trickle straight down into everyday goods and food prices.
