Huawei has launched its second-generation tri-fold smartphone, the Mate XT2, as the company works to protect its lead in China's high-end phone market against incoming hardware releases from Apple and Xiaomi.

Upgraded Hardware and Custom Silicon

The Mate XT2 unfolds twice into a tablet-sized display and runs on Huawei's new Kirin 9050 Pro processor. Built to offer higher processing power while drawing less battery, the chip design marks another step in Huawei's efforts to sidestep ongoing US tech restrictions.

The new model brings several notable updates over its predecessor:

Redesigned Structure: An updated folding mechanism and improved water resistance.

Screen Privacy: An optional display guard that blocks side-glances from people standing nearby.

System Boost: Upgraded camera hardware and a reported 42 percent bump in overall performance during internal testing.

China's High-End Phone Race

The Mate XT2 arrival sets off a busy week for mobile tech. Xiaomi is introducing a competing foldable device, while Apple prepares to unveil its next iPhone lineup, with industry analysts watching closely for potential foldable announcements.

According to research firm IDC, Huawei led China’s overall smartphone market in the second quarter with a 22.6 percent share, topping Apple’s 18.1 percent and Xiaomi’s 12.4 percent. Huawei's dominance is even wider in the foldable segment, where market tracker Smart Analytics Global reports the company captured 68 percent of all Chinese shipments in Q2.
